We were experiencing some sluggishness yesterday and briefly took the front page down in order to reboot the server right at the time you reported the downtime. That seemed to have perked things up, but obviously we want to avoid having to reboot things. :)
THE server? You mean the entire MacRumors site is run off of a single server? Color me impressed.

People forget that Apple has first and foremost always been a hardware company, one that produces electronic gadgets. Yes, they started off making computers, but even as early as the late 80s/early 90s, Apple was moving into other directions, such as the Newton (PDA) and the Pippin (video game console.) I don't think that a keynote dedicated to the iPhone is in any way a sign that Mac OS X is being "neglected." It's simply a presentation matter. It's easier to make a 90-minute keynote talking about new features in iPhone OS 2.0 than it is to say, "Snow Leopard will not have any major new features. Whoopee."

I'm taking the summer off, and after having saved up quite a bit of money, I'd like to visit Europe. Here's my current plan, and I'd really just like some input from fellow board members that travel a lot, have visited these places, etc.
Los Angles > Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon would be my first stop. I'd like to do some surfing, scuba diving, and exploring while here. Potentially work my way around other places in Portugal too (Porto maybe).
Portugal > Spain
I don't know much about this leg of the trip, but I'd like to visit Madrid and Barcelona.
Spain > France
I'll work my way around the south of France, before heading up to Paris.
France > Germany
A friend in Germany is taking time off, and has a car. She will show me her favorite things in the country.
Germany > Czech Republic
Praha! I know this will be fun.
Czech Republic > Austria > Hungary > Croatia
THis will be near the end of the trip, but I'd hope to do as much as possible in these cities.
I'm looking for advice on must see places, places to skip (possibly even whole countries), and anything else you great members might have to add!
Thanks!

You might even be able to swap the hard drive right into the new Mac and it should boot just fine depending on the age of the Intel if it can run the same software version. This is handy if you don't want to reinstall everything and keep your old settings and files.

Is this why we have a ratings system now?
Skynet took over MacRumors!!
No, but Skynet did take over Apple. See proof (http://www.macrumors.com/2011/04/20/researchers-disclose-iphone-and-ipad-location-tracking-privacy-issues/).
I always wondered if Arn let you guys keep all the Spam you delete. :)
We print out all spam posts and keep them in notebooks so arn can review them during our bi-centurial performance evaluations.

I actually wasn't videoing at the photo shoot, I was taking pictures. I did edit the video though.
Ugh! That cameraman was awful. Far too much twisting.
As for you editing: Yeh was v good. I thought there were to much fades for the beach shot. They worked on a few of the shots, but when both shots were panning/zooming they felt wrong. Other videos were good :)

BS. Where are you getting your info? The CPU does all the work, the HD only stores the info crunched to send back to SETI. I am coming up on my 1st yr anniversary and no problems. My main machine is the G3/300, 6 yrs old and still purring like the day it was new. Just make sure you have a good air flow through the box and everything will be fine. It is the peps that use PowerBooks that burn up your machine, probably because they don't raise it off the table to get air underneath it. I use 1/2" rubber feet and a small desk fan blowing across the unit to cool my PowerBook the fan hardly comes on. My temps never exceed 109F in my G3.
What happens is when you are processing a work unit, the result from each process is written back to disk. Although the data units are small (about 350kb) your Mac is continually reading / writing the data from the same sector of the disk. Think of it as a bush track. Although there is lots of dirt there, over time the people who walk through there make a groove.... Do you want this to happen to a $200 hard drive?
Now, lets say that data unit is somehow fragmented on your drive. Imagine all the work the drive heads have to do to read / write a data result.
This is why you should set up a ram disk - it saves your hard drive and actually speeds up the process. It is always faster to read / write from ram than it is to a HD. ;)

edit - although I do think distributed computing is a great solution to solving problems, I can't see myself being that dedicated setting up a box fan to cool my computer so I can pump out 300 work units a year....

Lesson: Don't install preview/beta OS over your original OS when you are relying on that machine.
I thought this was mandatory information. Come on, why would you ever run a beta on your everyday computer?
Makes sense to me..

"Apple is allegedly building two iPhone 5 models in place of a scheduled fall publish. According to an employee of an Apple part supplier, in attendance is good sense to believe with the purpose of the iPhone 5 will really be two devices: A standard and pro copy."

Hey all,
Long time listener first time caller, err I mean poster. I bought my first MacBook Pro (early 17", 2.3GHz, 8GB ram, anti-glare) in March and absolutely love it! Anyway the new iMacs were announced (as I'm sure everyone is aware of lol) and I started thinking about getting an iMac as my main machine and selling my 17" MBP. I'm currently deployed to Afghanistan so this wouldn't be until July when we get back, but a friend is ready to buy my 17, in fact we've already worked out a good price for both us of :D
So now the only thing left to decide is, do I get the 2.7GHz 13 inch, or the 2.0GHz 15 inch. I priced the 13" at $1748 ($1499 base + $249 AppleCare) versus the 15" (lower end model) at $2298 ($1799 base + $150 for hi-res anti-glare + $349 AppleCare). I'm gonna upgrade the RAM and HDDs myself, (getting an OptiBay, 256GB c300, and 750GB Scorpio Black for the new laptop too lol) so the cost for that is gonna be the same regardless of which model I get. I also like the idea of being able to just walk into an Apple Store and leaving with my new laptop, do they normally stock the hi-res anti-glare 15"?
I'd mostly be using the laptop while traveling (or deploying again lol), I use Aperture regularly (check out my Photography site at www.aaronpbrown.com) and may occasionally use Final Cut Express. Am I gonna miss the real estate on a 13" MBP, especially coming from a 17"? Also is the dedicated graphics, extra screen and quad core worth $550 over the 13?
Thanks for taking a look!

BTW: The 1gb shuffle is UK99.01 over here.
About US$186...
So that's why $30 seems fairly reasonable from a UK point of view.
Well... from my point of view anyway.

Skype is CPU intensive, this causes the MBA to work harder and the fans to spin to keep things cool. Why every week do we have threads on this? The computer hardware is doing what it is supposed to do. Its like saying "I pushed the "high" button on my blender and now the blender is going faster and getting louder".
I don't mean to sound mean or snippy here its not my intent its just that we have multiple threads like this every day.

This weekend ASU physicist Paul Davies celebrated the 50th anniversary of astronomer Frank Drake’s “start of the most ambitious scientific experiment in history”: the search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI); (Wall Street Journal; 4/10/10). On April 8, 1960 Drake, using the 85 foot radio telescope at Green Bank, WV, became the first to listen for signals from intelligent space aliens. But it’s been a long drought. According to Davies, "After five decades of patient listening, however, all the astronomers have to show for it is an eerie silence".
SETI, not my cup of tea.
i started folding a few days after my younger (and only) sister died from something that is being studied by F@H. she made it 2 days past her 35th birthday, and left a 4 month old baby and widow (and me) behind. i've been folding ever since, and won't stop until they quit giving out work units. period.
thanks to all who fold here/there/everywhere.
