macworld is more exciting for me but that's only because the websites fuel the excitement. With Christmas there is nothing that builds the hype for you.

Talk to Apple. This looks like the infamous Nvidia 8600M issue and may still be covered under Apple's replacement scheme (I actually got a brand new MBP out of them about 6 months out of warranty).
Make an appointment at your local genius bar and see what they say.

I have an iPad 1st generation running OS 4.3.2 (Jailbroken). It is running perfectly, except that I have a bunch of blank icons on my home screen (see the attached images). I can delete them, but every time I install a new app from the apple store, they come back.

It makes my Pismo feel like he can still be useful. I'm primarily in it to help out with Mac Cow Disease. Someone has to look after the cows. Especially if there's a chance it could spread to my prescious Mooses (I'm a moose lover.)
While I owe my start to MacRumors, I actually formed my own little team with the few computers I have control over. I enjoy seeing my team ranking slowly moving up the ranks (we're at around 2430 as a team now!)
Since my Pismo is the team captain (though obviously not the lead producer), it makes him feel good, too.
Edit - the scary part is, I had no intention of typing "Mac Cow". I really did mean Mad Cow. And, yet, I did it twice. Sometimes I think my fingers have a mind of their own. I also can't type "worship". It always comes out "workshop", since I work in continuing ed. Bad fingers!

It is amazing. It seems like just yesterday I was excited about our team getting time on the Japanese Earth Simulator. Now, as we're getting proposals together for Blue Waters, we need to show our code performance would scale to thousands of cores-- it's like having a dedicated Earth Simulator of our own.
I also love the line on having the power to predict the path a tornado would take. I think someone at IBM is BS'ing on that one. Even if the numerical schemes and parameterizations were up to the task (which they aren't), I bet the computational power would have to be much greater.
fun stuff...

If you're looking for thin.. I'd say go with the pinlo slice 3. Doesn't do much for drop protection. Works for scratches though and looks pretty damn good. I've got one on my i4 and love it

Ok, listing everything would take far too long, but last year i bought a lot of ibook pieces from another member here, picked out what i needed and fiddled with some of it.. and now I am going to be moving in a few weeks and want to get some of it cleared out.
ALSO - any of the bottom or lcd cases can be dyed or custom painted (inside for g3s and outside for g4s) before being shipped off to you for an extra 20 for g4 painting 30 for g3 painting (have to remove the white paint on the inside takes longer and more supplies) and 40 for dye - as it takes a lot longer and dye costs the most.
See my website http://web.mac.com/katyelizabeth -> other art - computers to see examples of painting!
I have TONS of 12inch ibook g3 and g4 top cases
a few bottom cases of both as well and a FEW 14inch ibook g3 cases
They are in various stages of painting, some painted, some plain , some clear, some primed, some normal - bunch of experiments
I have 3 batteries, all hold a charge, but some less then others
i have a powerbook 12 inch battery that holds a bit of a charge
some logic boards with various problems
screws gallore!
inner frames gallore!
3 harddrives 10gb and 20gb
a semi working optical drive
Random bits of ram
Cables, cords, random bits
fans, more cables,
KEYBOARDS (g3 ibooks) AND topcases (trackpad etc) (from both g3 AND g4 12inchers and i think a 14incher in there for a g3)
An original airport card SOLD
hinge covers, a complete top case with LCD - may or may not be functioning, looks to be in good shape though.
thin metal sheets that go in side and over the back of the top cases and more...
I have a bunch of other stuff, and will post some pictures of the piles... but if you have an ibook g3 or g4 and are looking for a replacement part or just want something from one of them, let me know, i probably have it!
PM me an offer or drop one here with what you want and your offer (including shipping please)

Hey all,
My friend who goes to IU called me up today for information on buying a mac. I explained to him that for what he wanted to do a 12" iBook would be more than enough power. He was really sold, however, when I let me in on the deal macmall is running right now.
They have $50 off all iBook ($100 off powerbooks and powermacs)
A Free 1GB stick of ram with $39.99 install charge
A Free All-In-One Espon Printer
And a Free Carrying case and sleeve
After rebate he would only pay $990  He then got really pumped and said he is going to place his order in the next few day haha. My work here has been done... and this from the guy who has been burned many times by Apple ;)
P.S. I just had my first very negative experience with Dell but that is for another time and another thread haha.

Hi guys,
wondered if someone can help at all. Have searched the net quite extensively with this one - I'm now under the assumption the logic board will need replacing unless anyone can tell me otherwise?
I'll list as much info as I can if you need anything else let me know.
Got an iPhone 3g from a friend that only powers in DFU mode when connected to the mac/pc.
Blank screen permanently on.
All restores return error code 6.
2 different usb cables tried, tested on OSX 10.6.7, windows 7 + sp1 and xp sp3 (xp is virtual).
I do not know what version firmware was previously on it.
I have tried to restore official 2.0.1, 2.1, 3.1.2, 3.1.3, 4.1, 4.2
I have tried custom firmware on 3.1.3, 2.1, 4.1
I have attempted jailbreak with redsn0w, pwnagetool, ziphone
redsn0w seems to work then instead of booting to springboard the iphone just reverts back into dfu.
I have checked the logs of these restores and noticed this:
Error setting variable - 'boot-args': (iokit/common) general error
error setting 'boot-args' to '': 1
to which a little googling led me to a possibility with logic board.
I have tried using iRecovery but to be honest unsure where to go with it i also tried TinyUmberella which attempted to fix recovery and the phone didnt reboot. just stayed in dfu.
Although this is in DFU i have kept making a point of making sure i manually place it into DFU when attempting restores just to make sure its not in recovery mode (though i doubt it ever has been as it has never shown the 'connect to itunes' message- just always a blank screen unless recovering.
Recovery for all firmware seems to get 99% of the way before showing error 6.
Does anyone know a way of fixing this issue or do I give up and sell for spares/repair?
Thanks

I have a Mx 1000 too, and as everyone else has said, it is the best mouse I have ever used. It glides effortlessly on my desk and is very accurate and smooth. At first, it sees a little big and heavy, but you get used to it because it is very comfortable. According to logitech's site, the battery lasts 21 days. I haven't timed it, but that is about how long it lasts for me. Amazon had the cheapest price when I ordered it. Check there. It is a bit expensive, but it's worth every penny.

Another option if you do not want to go with a USB player or worry about Audio out from a receiver or AV Processor is the NAD PP3i ($199). There are a few others out there, but they are creeping into the $500+ price range. I am looking at this unit for myself so I can plug my turntable into it, use a USB cable to connect to my Mac Mini and rip the albums with the NAD software ($25 extra). It helps with tagging the songs, removing clicks and pops, and exports to various audio files including ALAC, which is what I use.
Software RIAA equalization is available at no cost. There is arguments that it might be even more acurate then a real phono preamp, certainly cheaper.
If budget is unlimited then yes, buy everything. But if you have only $199 to spend. Buy a new photo cartridge or something that really will have a huge impact on the sound.
The way to ask this question is "given the gear I already own and my budget what new gear will give the best sound?" the answer is different for everyone. For most people the best use of funds is to spend monay as "close to the vinyl" as yuo can. Start with leaning equipment to remove dirt. That has biggest payoff, then look at in this order stylus, cartridge turntable and then the audio interface into the computer. It's is a one-way signal flow later stages can not un-do hard cause by early stages, so work from the vinyl then follow the signal down stream investing in upgrades i nthat order
So that preamp might be worth it if the gear upstream is up to the task or a total waste of money if the turn table and cartridge as junk. It all depends

I was looking in the developer forums. That is where you should search since it is a preview release. The people there will be able to assist better.

No need to be rude...
More importantly, this is the build that Apple is considering to be a GM1″ revision internally
Was just wondering if that means it is already featured-locked.

I mean, yeah, but it's not worth worrying about. Maybe if you reformat 10 times a day...but how many times are you really going to do it...
You could argue that opening and closing your Macintosh HD could create more wear and tear on the HD than letting it sit.
On the iMac, you can replace the HD though, so if worst comes to worst, and it's out of warranty, you can just but a new one.

At least with the Xbox bundle (250 gig model with 2 games) is only 50 bucks more than the basic 4 gig model - that was the one I got. And that is a MS bundle that is all in one box.
As far as the rest is concerned, profit margins on individual systems is so razor thin, they just make more on the bundle models. Thats why the console prices are so fixed across stores.

I think the song Gold Digger is fine. I think Kanye West is fine. However, that song for that crowd wasn't fine. I think another song would have been better, like "Hey Mama." Can't argue with that song. Lots of people in that room wouldn't have look so "Mike Myers-ish" as Kanye rapped that one.
How about Dave Matthews Band? Sure, people do love them, but if they sang "Crash Into Me," that would be a bit disturbing, wouldn't it? "And I come into you-oo-hooo.........in a boys dream."

I'd say, get the iPad 2. Since I got mine, the only thing I've used my iPhone for is to make calls. I'll definitely be switching to the cheaper AT&T data plan for my phone. My lap top is now permanently anchored to my desk. When the time comes it will be replaced with an iMac.

Not quite. You said c&p the whole quote. I said only need to c&p the quote= part (the bit with square brackets and the poster's name inside). Each to their own. Maybe I shouldn't have said 'much faster', but it works for me.
Just to make sure I'm not misunderstanding, if I click the multi-quote buttons on post #2 and #3 and click "Post Reply", then use your method to "erase the first /quote, and paste (or retype it) after the second /quote", I get this, which isn't accurate, since it makes it look like I quoted iStudentUK:
The only way I know how to do it is to copy the quote and paste it manually within the quoted post. If the quote came from another post, as in your example, you can use the multi-quote button (http://images.macrumors.com/vb/images/buttons/multiquote_off.gif) to get both quotes in your reply, then cut and paste the original post into the post that quoted it.
Thanks, that is the method I have been using. It just seems a bit inelegant!
